Nanoscale barrier for PLA
Spain's ITENE was one of the privileged few exhibiting within the Pack Innovation section of November's Emballage 2012 show in Paris, demonstrating the effectiveness of its nanoclay materials in conjunction with polylactide (PLA), in particular.
A prototype bottle showed how the integration of nanoclays provided the PLA with sufficient gas barrier for milk, juices and edible oils, together with improved mechanical strength and greater flexibility. The nanomaterials, which are approved for food contact, can also be applied to more traditional polymers such as polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
