European "Shopping Baskets"

The results of the European Shopping Baskets (ESB) programme have been published, detailing the amount and types of packaging around products purchased by consumers in five EU countries.

The programme was jointly managed by STFI-Packforsk, Sweden, and the Brussels-based European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment (Europen).

Kennert Johansson, head of the Packaging & Logistics Division at STFI-Packforsk, says: "The findings of the ESB programme help us see the big picture of packaging, its relation to products we consume, and its vital function in that capacity."

There are significant national differences. For instance, while Estonia, Finland and Poland utilise high levels of reusable primary packaging, Italy and the UK have virtually none.

The aim of ESB was to generate data to improve understanding of what drives development and demand for packaging in the fast-moving consumer goods sector. In particular, the study could provide a basis for optimising distribution systems, says Europen.
