The I3A is a Research Institute that belongs to the University of Zaragoza and involve multiple fields and departments. The activities of the I3A can be summarized in four areas: research, technology transfer, training and education and science dissemination. The main goals are:

  • The improvement of scientific research and continuous search for excellence.
  • The promotion of economic development at the regional, national and international level via knowledge generation and technology transfer to industry.
  • Training of highly qualified engineers and scientists that can adapt to changing scientific and technological environments and with solid human, cultural and social values.
  • Dissemination of science and technology.

I3A promotes the PhD Programme on Packaging for Large Consumption Products (Food, Pharmacy, Cosmetic, Detergency), a new interdisciplinary Doctorate Programme in which Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science and Packaging Design are combined to provide a high qualification for facing the innovation and studies in depth on packaging context.

The main research activities related to Packaging are the followings:

  • Development of new active packaging materials
  • Studies on the mechanism of active behaviour
  • Development of analytical procedures for specific migration studies
  • Migration studies
  • Design of migration tests for all kind of materials including coatings, paper and board, plastics, etc.
  • Research on new materials for high chemical resistance and high barrier
  • Behaviour of materials in the retail market
  • Studies on plastic materials for high temperature applications (microwave, conventional oven …)
  • Studies on adhesives (natural and synthetics) for paper, board, plastics and cork.
